The OS456™ is a circuit board that is installed in a RS Pro2005/2006 and the OS535™ is installed in a RS Pro 2035 scanner. These boards provide, on the radio back panel, a modified RS-232 interface that connects to a host computer. The default state of the OS456™/OS535™ is Local Control. This means that the Radio operates normally from its front panel controls. When a program in the Host Computer wants control of the radio, it sends a command to the OS456™/OS535™ requesting it to go into Remote Mode. When in Remote Mode, the OS456™/OS535™ completely disables the Radio’s front panel and all normally supplied functions (i.e. memory, scan limits, etc.). Thus the Host Computer must replace all of the normal functionality of the radio, but this allows the Host computer to add new functionality to the radio.
To put it another way, all the OS456‚Ñ¢/OS535‚Ñ¢ interface uses, of the original radio circuitry, is the frequency synthesizer and the analog circuits (volume and squelch). Each frequency and demodulation settings must be transferred, by the Host, to the radio one at a time and then the Host must wait and sense for the presence of a signal. If a signal is present, then the Mac must wait until the signaling tone detectors settle after which the signaling tone information can be requested.
